The winter transfer window is rarely a dull affair, even if it’s often less exciting than its sister version in the summer. But rest assured rumours will swirl around from the get-go as teams scrap for every advantage they can get in a bid to make a success of their respective campaigns.
In the Premier League, the battling is as fierce as ever, with an open race for the Champions League emerging amid the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United all underperforming, while Chelsea have joined Arsenal in trying to create something of a title race which is looking increasingly one-sided thanks to Liverpool.
At the other end, Southampton are in danger of setting all the wrong kinds of records given their lowly points haul at the halfway stage, while fellow promoted side Ipswich Town may need a miracle or two in the second half of the season to stay up themselves.
All this means a potentially frantic rush to bolster squads as suspensions hit and injuries bite ahead of a packed start to 2025 – particularly for those in European and cup contention.

Aston Villa made the Premier League’s first major January splurge as they spent an initial £19m on Borussia Dortmund forward Donyell Malen. In a deal which could rise to £21.5m with add-ons, the transfer sees Malen return to England having previously been a member of Arsenal’s youth team.
The Dutchman’s arrival will pose fresh questions over Jhon Duran’s future, with the Villa super-sub rumoured to be on the move this summer before starting the season in red-hot form.
There could yet be more additions before the month is out as Unai Emery continues to shape his squad ahead of the Champions League knockout stages.

Aston Villa will be aiming to make a few signings and sell some players this January.

Brighton made the first big deal of the January window, albeit through their agreement to sign midfielder Diego Gomez in December. They will pay MLS side Inter Miami £11m for the Paraguayan, who becomes Fabian Hurzeler’s first signing of the winter.
The Seagulls have had some promising results in the opening half of the Premier League season, so their placing of 10th heading into 2025 is somewhat underwhelming.
However, they remain firmly in the race to return to European football at the first time of asking under their new head coach, who has overseen victories over Man City and Spurs in his opening months at the helm.

With another spending spree in the summer, the fact that Chelsea have been quiet this January will surprise few. Their most high-profile activity to date has been Renato Veiga’s loan departure to Juventus, while the future of Joao Felix remains uncertain late in the window.
Considering the Blues have exceeded pre-season expectations, you would understand Enzo Maresca’s reluctance to make too many changes to his squad as they chase a Champions League berth and Conference League glory this term.
They will also have to be wary of PSR constraints, and if they are to splash the cash once again next summer, perhaps a more frugal approach this winter is just what they need amid an impressive first half of the campaign.

After failing to secure a deal in the summer, the Tractor Boys reignited their interest in ex-Hull City star Jaden Philogene as his move back to Aston Villa went stale. Kieran McKenna will hope it is £20m well spent, while his other recruits this month have seen him bring in more top-flight experience.
Ben Godfrey has temporarily returned from Serie A outfit Atalanta, with the former Everton ace bolstering the East Anglians’ defence. Julio Enciso has had a tricky time of late with injuries, and amid a lack of opportunities under Fabian Hurzeler at Brighton, the Paraguayan has sealed a switch to Portman Road until the end of the season.
